I always thought the Alzheimer's boogeyman would come out from my father's closet due to the prevalence in his family (24 siblings). After passing away from a heart attack in 2007, I concluded that closet door had shut for good. Much to my family's dismay, Labor Day Weekend 2019, our lives were changed when we woke up to the boogeyman that had come out of my mother's closet instead. Each day, week, month and year is a constant decline. A stranger now lives in the body of a once caring, loving and amazingly strong women in every way...my best friend, my confidant.
As an only child and a single woman, life turned on its head for me with no sense of direction. No idea how to navigate the next step for my mother. Keeping her at home and caring for her was my promise to her as a young adult. The journey so far has been gut wrenching and difficult. But this has taught me to appreciate the smallest things in life and to cherish each day with my best friend. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease to the affected loved one and even more so to their family. We have been blessed with an amazing caregiver which at times I feel is more for me than for my mom.
The Alzheimer's Association is there for both. I would be thrilled to have you participate by walking on our team "TEAM MEMORY MAKERS" If you are unable to physically participate, it would be immensely appreciated if you would consider donating any amount to the cause. I hope to see you then.
Warmest regards,
